Excess fat and breast tissue on men’s breasts is called gynecomastia. Breast enlargement is mainly caused by an imbalance in estrogen and testosterone levels, which is common in boys during puberty or in adult men undergoing hormonal changes. Gynaecomastia  surgery can also be accompanied by enlargement of other areas of the body, such as the shoulders or abdomen.

  • Scarless Technique (Endoscopic Assisted Gynaecomastia Surgery) –
    • Small incisions (around 5 mm) are made in inconspicuous areas such as the armpit (axilla) or the edge of the areola.
    • An endoscope (a thin tube with a camera) is inserted through the incision to guide the surgeon in removing excess fat and glandular tissue.
    • Liposuction is often used alongside the endoscopic approach to further sculpt the chest.
  • Traditional Excision Technique –
    • The surgeon makes an incision around the areola (periareolar incision) or in the crease of the chest, depending on the specific case and the extent of surgery needed.
    • Excess glandular tissue, fat, and sometimes excess skin are removed through the incision.
    • The surgeon might also reposition the nipple and areola for a more natural appearance.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate For Gynaecomastia Surgery?

Corrective gynecomastia surgery, also known as gynecomastia reduction surgery, is used to treat enlarged or swollen breast tissue in men. The ideal candidate for gynecomastia correction surgery is someone who meets the following criteria

Common FAQs on Gynaecomastia Surgery

As male breasts (fibro-fatty tissue) enlarge, they protrude and appear larger, in a manner almost similar to female breasts. This is a common situation, however, for very different reasons. This procedure is elective for aesthetic and medical reasons and is necessary for men who -

 1. Chronic inability to get rid of male breasts through exercise and alternative medicine treatments.

2. Gynecomastia occurs after suffering from liver failure, testicular failure, or side effects of chronic medications such as cimetidine, digitalis, or steroids.

3. Negative psychological and behavioral changes, such as feeling insecure, anxious, isolated or depressed.

4. Generally decent, but must be in top condition for professional reasons.

Gynecomastia can help men who are concerned about their appearance to boost their confidence and radically transform the way they see themselves.

In India, most people who undergo gynecomastia surgery have their stitches removed within the next seven to ten days, as the wound appears to have superficially healed. However, it takes several weeks for the entire area to heal. This is where compression garments come in handy. After a week, you may be able to resume normal activities. You can start light lower body exercises after the second week. That is, you are not allowed to lift weights until you have fully recovered (at least six weeks).

If there is a long incision, your chest will be fitted with a thin drain attached to a retainer pad holder to remove excess fluid that collects in the chest area. These tubes and dressings will be removed when the drainage stops.
Wear a compression garment, which collapses the gaps and allows the skin to contract and adhere to the wall muscles. These garments should be worn for at least six weeks.
You'll receive a set of specific instructions that include modifying activities to take pressure off the fresh wound, maintaining a healthy diet, taking prescribed pain relievers, and more. You must follow them faithfully.

The results of gynecomastia surgery will depend on the surgical technique used, as some surgeons use more invasive methods, while others use less invasive techniques to achieve better aesthetic results. Also, it has been proven to be very effective when performed by an experienced person. Dr. Pranav Thusay is a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon.
